Aurora Pumps & Asbestos Exposure
Founded in 1919, Aurora Pumps began by manufacturing deep-well turbine pumps.
After facing bankruptcy and reorganizing in 1927, the company introduced asbestos-containing components into its products to meet the demands of high-heat, high-pressure environments. These components, including gaskets, packing, insulation, and seals, leveraged asbestos for its heat resistance and durability.
Like many manufacturers of the 20th century, Aurora Pumps continued using asbestos well after the severe health and environmental risks were known.
Despite ongoing financial challenges, the company became a key supplier to the U.S. military during World War II, with its pump systems installed on bases, ships, and submarines — contributions that earned the company several wartime awards.
Aurora Pumps did not phase out asbestos use until the 1980s. Today, it operates as a brand under the Pentair Pump Group.
Dangers of Asbestos-Related Diseases
Asbestos refers to a group of six naturally occurring minerals known for their fibrous structure and unique physical properties. These minerals break into thin, flexible fibers that resist heat, fire, chemical damage, and electricity.
Thanks to these qualities, along with low cost and wide availability, asbestos was heavily used in manufacturing to improve product strength and durability. Companies like Aurora Pumps prioritized these benefits, often ignoring or minimizing the serious health risks tied to asbestos exposure.
When asbestos-containing materials are mined, installed, repaired, or disturbed, microscopic fibers can be released into the air. Once inhaled or swallowed, these fibers can lodge in the body’s tissues, where they remain for decades, causing inflammation, scarring, and cellular damage that can lead to life-threatening diseases.
Fact
Aurora Pumps earned a prestigious civilian honor, the Army-Navy “E” award, for its work supplying the military during World War II. However, asbestos exposure poses a significant threat in the confined and poorly ventilated spaces found on ships and submarines. In such environments, airborne asbestos particles can accumulate quickly, leading to a heightened risk of inhalation and ingestion.
Source: Mesothelioma FundDiseases caused by asbestos exposure include:
- Mesothelioma
- Lung cancer
- Asbestosis
- Pleural thickening
- Pleural plaques
- Pleural effusions
- Other forms of cancer
Mesothelioma is an aggressive and rare cancer that affects the lining of internal organs, called the mesothelium. It’s caused exclusively by asbestos exposure. The disease is challenging and costly to treat, with average annual out-of-pocket costs for patients reaching around $400,000.
Financial Compensation From Aurora Pumps
Despite decades of legal trouble and significant asbestos-related liability, Aurora Pumps has never declared bankruptcy and does not operate an asbestos trust fund. Instead, they handle asbestos claims through court cases and insurance.
Victims seeking legal compensation from Aurora Pumps have two primary options:
- Personal injury lawsuit: Allows living victims of asbestos exposure to seek compensation for their losses.
- Wrongful death lawsuit: Allows the dependents or family members of deceased asbestos exposure victims to recover damages for the loss of their loved one.
Because asbestos was widely used across many industries during the 20th century, individuals who were exposed often have the right to pursue claims against several manufacturers. An experienced asbestos lawyer can help identify all potential sources of exposure by using specialized resources, such as product databases and investigative tools.
This thorough approach may increase your chances of securing the maximum possible compensation. Your attorney can also help you explore other potential avenues for financial recovery, such as:
- Benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
- Workers’ compensation
- Treatment grants
Asbestos Lawsuits Against Aurora Pumps
Perry Wilson Adams
Perry Adams was a paper mill worker who died of mesothelioma in 2012 after nearly 20 years of occupational asbestos exposure through the pumps and gaskets he encountered on the job.
His wife filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Aurora Pumps and several other companies and was awarded $5 million in damages.
James Morgan
James Morgan developed mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos while working at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He and his wife filed a lawsuit against Aurora Pumps and several other manufacturers that had supplied the shipyard with asbestos-contaminated products.
Aurora Pumps attempted to have the case dismissed through a motion for summary judgment, but the court denied the request. Although Mr. Morgan passed away before the case was resolved, his widow was permitted to continue pursuing the lawsuit on his behalf.
Cenzia Gomez
Cenzia Gomez filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of her late husband, who served in the United States Coast Guard and later worked in ship repair, servicing asbestos-contaminated pump systems.
Following his death from asbestos lung cancer, she sued Aurora Pumps and several other negligent manufacturers. Aurora Pumps sought summary judgment but was denied, allowing her to proceed with her case.
George Abbay
George Abbay was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma after spending 26 years working in asbestos-contaminated environments as a ship rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
He filed a lawsuit against Aurora Pumps and several other manufacturers, alleging negligence and product liability for supplying asbestos-containing products to the U.S. Navy — products he was regularly exposed to while working aboard naval vessels.
Asbestos-Containing Products Used at Aurora Pumps
Industrial pump systems, such as those manufactured by Aurora Pumps, are often required to operate in high-temperature, high-pressure environments where fire could be devastating.
Throughout the 20th century, many manufacturers incorporated asbestos components, including gaskets, packing, and insulation, to enhance the durability and resistance of their pump systems.
Asbestos-contaminated Aurora Pumps products include:
- Boiler feed systems
- Booster systems
- Condensate pumps
- Condensate systems
- End suction pumps
- Fire pumps
- Sewage pumps
- Split case pumps
- Sump pumps
- Turbine pumps
- Vertical inline pumps
Occupations At-Risk
Despite decades of financial instability and frequent changes of hands, Aurora Pumps still held a large share of the industrial pump market. Its asbestos-contaminated products harmed thousands of Aurora Pumps employees and end users across multiple industries.
High-risk occupations include:
- Boiler workers
- Construction workers
- HVAC workers
- Firefighters
- Insulators
- Maintenance workers
- Merchant mariners
- Oil refinery workers
- Plumbers
- Power plant workers
- Shipyard workers
- Steamfitters
- U.S. Navy veterans
Sadly, many individuals who worked with asbestos unintentionally exposed their family members by carrying home asbestos fibers on their clothes, skin, or hair. This type of secondary or “take-home” exposure can also result in serious asbestos-related diseases, deserving of compensation.
Asbestos exposure disproportionately affects veterans, with nearly one-third of new mesothelioma diagnoses each year occurring within this group. If you’re a veteran seeking compensation for an asbestos-related injury, it’s important to remember that your claim is not against the United States government or the military. Instead, you are holding negligent asbestos manufacturers responsible for the harm they have caused.
