Avon & Asbestos Exposure

Avon, established in 1886, initially achieved recognition through its pioneering direct-selling model and comprehensive catalog of beauty items. Starting in 1928, talcum powder, valued for its silky feel, smoothing, and drying qualities, was an ingredient in many of these products.

Due to contamination during the mining process, talc frequently contains asbestos. Avon’s cosmetic talc products were unfortunately affected by this issue, with some containing significant amounts (up to 25%) of tremolite, a type of asbestos.

Consumers faced a serious risk of illness due to contamination in talc products. Asbestos exposure occurred through various means, including the application of personal hygiene and cosmetic products, inhaling airborne talc dust, and secondary exposure within the household.

In 1976, the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrances Association (CTFA) issued voluntary guidelines regarding asbestos contamination and talcum powder. Despite growing knowledge of the dangers of asbestos-contaminated talc, Avon continued to use talcum powder in its products until 2020, when it changed its formulation in response to a growing number of lawsuits.  

Dangers of Talc Products That Contain Asbestos

The geological proximity of asbestos and talc, both naturally occurring minerals, makes cross-contamination during mining a frequent problem. This often resulted in significant asbestos contamination in talc that Avon and other companies sold to consumers, misleadingly labeling it as “cosmetic-grade” and safe.

This contamination posed a severe risk. Long-term, repeated use of asbestos-contaminated talc products increases the danger of inhalation, which can subsequently lead to severe asbestos-related diseases emerging decades later.

Diseases Linked to Avon Talcum Powder

Inhaling or ingesting asbestos-contaminated talc products over a prolonged period can cause severe illness. The asbestos particles settle in body tissues, leading to long-term irritation, scarring, and cell damage.

This development typically spans decades. The latency period (the time between exposure and diagnosis) for many asbestos-related diseases is notably long, often between 10 and 50 years. Consequently, many consumers who used Avon products during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s are only now starting to exhibit symptoms.

However, in August 2024, Avon filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, limiting victims’ legal recourse while the company and the courts negotiated a restructuring plan. One year later, in August 2025, a bankruptcy judge in Delaware approved the company’s reorganization plan.

The plan includes establishing a trust fund to handle all current and future asbestos claims. The company will fund the trust with approximately $31 million in cash, allowing claimants to pursue compensation outside the court system, eliminating the need for a trial.

Avon Asbestos Lawsuits

Beginning in the 2010s, Avon, like other talc companies, began facing a rising wave of litigation. The situation became so serious that the company stopped using talc in the U.S. market in 2020.  

By the time the company filed for bankruptcy in 2024, it had 386 pending asbestos cases against it and had spent​​ $225 million in legal defense fees. The majority of these talcum powder lawsuits focused on a few recurring issues, including dangerous and flawed product design and the failure to notify consumers of potential risks.

2024 (Illinois) 

A Cook County jury awarded Cipriano Ramirez and his family a $24.4 million verdict to compensate for his mesothelioma diagnosis. Mr. Ramirez was exposed to asbestos in the 1980s while working as a janitor at Avon’s facility in Morton Grove, where the company processed asbestos-contaminated talc and manufactured talc products. 

2022 (California) 

Rita-Ann Chapman and her husband, Gary, filed suit against Avon and several other asbestos companies after she was diagnosed with terminal mesothelioma. During the trial, evidence emerged that Avon sold four talc products the company knew contained high levels of asbestos for 103 days to exhaust its stock.

The jury found that Avon had acted with malice when hiding these risks, holding it 90% responsible for Mrs. Chapman’s cancer. The jury awarded the Chapmans $40.8 million in compensatory damages and $11.3 million in punitive damages, a total of $52.1 million.

Avon’s catalogue featured many talc-based products, though only a fraction of these have been specifically named in asbestos lawsuits.
