Chevron Oil Refineries

Fact checked and legally reviewed by Daniel Wasserberg, Esq. • Contributor & Legal Advisor

Chevron Oil refineries did not manufacture asbestos products, but they made extensive use of asbestos-containing materials, especially insulation on pipes, boilers, and other equipment. This widespread use meant that many workers were likely exposed to dangerous asbestos fibers, increasing their risk of serious health conditions.

If you or a loved one has developed an illness related to asbestos exposure at a Chevron refinery, you may be eligible for compensation.

Chevron & Asbestos Exposure

Chevron Oil has been a major force in the energy industry since the mid-1800s, with a long-standing commitment to delivering affordable and reliable energy. To maintain efficiency and safety in its refineries, insulation has played a critical role.

In fact, insulation is used extensively throughout oil refining facilities. Industry experts estimate that a single refinery may include more than 61 miles of insulated piping and over 270,000 square feet of insulated equipment.

Before the early 1990s, much of this insulation contained asbestos, a highly effective material known for its heat resistance, fireproofing qualities, and ability to prevent mold. Unfortunately, while it served a functional purpose, asbestos also posed serious health risks to workers exposed to its fibers.

Dangers of Asbestos-Related Diseases

Asbestos insulation is made up of microscopic fibers that can easily become airborne, especially during activities like demolition, repair, remodeling, or even routine use. These fibers are so small that they’re often invisible to the naked eye, but once inhaled or ingested, they can lodge in the body and cause long-term damage.

Prolonged asbestos exposure has been linked to several serious health conditions, including:

  • Mesothelioma
  • Lung cancer
  • Asbestosis
  • Other cancer
  • Pleural effusions
  • Pleural plaques
  • Pleural thickening

Among these, mesothelioma is one of the most aggressive and devastating illnesses tied to asbestos. This rare cancer develops as multiple small tumors in the mesothelium, the thin layer of tissue surrounding the lungs and other organs.

Fact

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mesothelioma symptoms may take up to 40 years to appear after the initial exposure, making early detection and prevention especially challenging.

Financial Compensation From Chevron

Chevron Oil does not have an established asbestos trust fund. As a result, individuals and families affected by asbestos exposure at Chevron refineries may have the right to pursue compensation directly through lawsuits, holding the company accountable for the serious health risks caused by its use of asbestos-containing materials.

There are two main types of legal claims available:

  • Personal injury lawsuits: Filed by individuals who developed asbestos-related illnesses, such as mesothelioma or lung cancer, after working in Chevron refineries.
  • Wrongful death lawsuits: Filed by the families of workers who died as a result of those illnesses.

These lawsuits can provide meaningful compensation, but they are often complex. That’s why it’s essential to work with an experienced asbestos attorney who understands both the legal system and the medical impact of asbestos exposure. The right legal team can help you navigate the process and fight for the compensation you deserve.

In addition to filing a lawsuit, victims and families may be eligible for other forms of financial recovery, including:

Asbestos Lawsuits Against Chevron Oil

Numerous individuals and families have taken legal action against Chevron Oil, seeking justice for asbestos-related illnesses tied to the company’s facilities and operations. Here are a few notable cases:

Mason South

From 1945 to 1982, Mason South served as a merchant marine aboard ships owned by Texaco, which was later acquired by Chevron. In the late 1990s, he was diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness and agreed to a settlement, signing a release.

Years later, South was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a far more serious condition. He filed a new lawsuit against Chevron. Although the company attempted to dismiss the case based on the earlier release, the court rejected the motion and allowed the case to proceed.

Carlo Badamo

Carlo Badamo worked on Chevron-owned ships between 1944 and 1954. Decades later, he developed asbestos-related cancer and sued the company. Badamo sought to expedite the proceedings out of concern that he might pass away before he could be formally deposed.

Soraya Sabetian

Soraya Sabetian filed a lawsuit against Chevron after her husband was diagnosed with mesothelioma following his work in company-owned facilities under a contract with the Iranian government. The family pursued damages for the profound loss of a beloved husband and father.

Though the case faced significant legal challenges, and Chevron ultimately prevailed on appeal, the court did not dispute the diagnosis. Instead, Chevron argued that responsibility rested with the Iranian government.

Asbestos-Containing Products Found at Chevron Refineries

Chevron Oil refineries once relied heavily on asbestos-containing insulation to manage the high heat generated by equipment and machinery. While modern insulation materials are asbestos-free, remnants of older materials may still be present in some facilities.

Workers employed at these refineries decades ago may have been exposed to airborne asbestos fibers during routine operations. Even today, employees involved in renovation, maintenance, or abatement projects may still face asbestos exposure risks.

Common refinery materials historically known to contain asbestos include:

  • Pipe and boiler insulation
  • Wall insulation
  • Fireproofing materials
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Flooring
  • Sealants

Occupations at Risk From Chevron Oil Refineries

Asbestos fibers are microscopic and can easily become airborne, putting anyone working in refineries containing asbestos at risk of exposure.

Occupations with especially high exposure risk include:

It’s also important to note that asbestos fibers can cling to workers’ clothing and be unknowingly brought home, putting family members at risk through secondary, or “take-home,” exposure.

Fact

A 1986 report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health revealed that lung health problems were found across nearly all job categories within refineries. Importantly, the longer an individual worked in these environments, the greater their risk of developing asbestos-related lung diseases.
