International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT)

International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT), Inc. is a large electronics and industrial manufacturer. From the 1920s through the 1980s, many of its products incorporated asbestos, which created significant health risks for workers and consumers exposed to those materials.

Individuals who were exposed to asbestos through ITT or its subsidiaries and later developed asbestos-related illnesses, such as mesothelioma, may be entitled to seek compensation.

Key Facts About ITT & Asbestos Risks

  • Compensation: ITT does not have an asbestos trust fund. In 2021, it divested all asbestos liabilities to Delticus, a specialty holding company. Victims and their loved ones may qualify for financial compensation.
  • Products: ITT used asbestos insulation, wiring, packing, gaskets, and other components in its electronic and industrial products.
  • Occupations at High-Risk: In addition to ITT employees, others who worked with or around its products, such as electricians, engineers, insulators, and boiler workers, also face high risks of asbestos-related illnesses.

Highest-Risk Occupations

Many workers handled asbestos or asbestos components at ITT plants and factories during manufacturing. The company used asbestos in its facilities and incorporated it into its products to reduce fire risks and prevent overheating.

Despite knowing the risks posed by asbestos to human health and the environment, ITT continued using it until the 1980s.

Who Is at Highest Risk for Exposure?

While it’s possible to develop an asbestos-related illness simply from living or working in a building with asbestos, the highest risks are associated with occupational exposure.

Individuals who regularly encountered asbestos at work frequently develop serious illnesses like mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis decades later.

Boiler Workers

Boiler workers often came into contact with asbestos in gaskets, packing, and insulation, used in ITT industrial products.

Disturbing these materials during installation, maintenance, repairs or replacements released fibers that later contributed to asbestos-related cancers and other respiratory illnesses.

Electricians

Electricians working around ITT equipment could encounter asbestos in wiring, insulation, and other heat-resistant components, especially during installation, maintenance, or repairs.

Repeated exposure to asbestos dust increases the risk of illness.

Factory Workers

Factory workers at ITT facilities encountered asbestos in manufacturing areas, equipment, and building materials.

Over time, that exposure could lead to severe diseases, particularly for those working in poorly ventilated areas where asbestos fibers could remain airborne for hours.

Insulators

Insulators may have handled asbestos-containing wrapping, block insulation, and pipe coverings used in ITT facilities or ITT products to control heat and prevent fires.

Cutting, fitting, or removing those materials released fibers into the air, endangering anyone in the area.

Family Members Exposed to Secondhand Asbestos

Family members of asbestos workers may be eligible for compensation if they were exposed during standard household activities, such as washing contaminated work clothes.

Surviving dependents may qualify for compensation.

ITT Asbestos Products

ITT valued asbestos for its heat resistance and durability, incorporating it into many of its products and using it through its facilities beginning in the 1920s.

Several of ITT’s subsidiaries, such as Goulds Pumps, Bell & Gossett, and Grinnell, LLC, also relied on asbestos. These subsidiaries manufactured, sold, and used asbestos components.

ITT and its subsidiaries phased out asbestos from their operation in the 1980s. However, legacy equipment and older installations continued to pose exposure risks to those who encounter them.

Fact

In 2017, ITT won a lawsuit against two dozen excess insurers, securing $1 billion in coverage for asbestos liabilities. The California court ruled that these insurance policies are triggered at the time of exposure, leaving the insurers on the hook for the full liability outlined in the policies.

Securing Compensation From ITT

ITT is a major international manufacturer with interests in several industries. These broad interests, as well as its acquisition of multiple other asbestos manufacturers, have created a broad exposure footprint.

If you or a loved one has been exposed to ITT asbestos products and developed an asbestos-related disease, you may be entitled to legal compensation.

Additionally, people eligible for compensation from ITT may also have valid claims against other asbestos companies or qualify for other forms of compensation, such as workers’ compensation or VA benefits.

Filing a Lawsuit

ITT never declared bankruptcy or established an asbestos trust fund. Although it completed a liability transfer to Delticus in 2021, victims of ITT asbestos exposure still have legal options for seeking compensation.

There are two primary types of lawsuits victims can file:

  • Personal injury lawsuit: This allows living victims of asbestos exposure to seek compensation for their losses.
  • Wrongful death lawsuit: This allows dependents or family members of deceased asbestos exposure victims to recover damages for the loss of their loved one.

If you choose to file a claim, it’s important to remember that the majority of asbestos claims never go to trial. Many companies like ITT prefer out-of-court settlements, which eliminate the need to admit wrongdoing and limit bad PR.

Settling out of court can be beneficial for victims as well, offering a quick, secure route to compensation without the stress of a trial.

Key Requirements to File

  • Diagnosis: Claimants must have a diagnosis of an asbestos-related illness (such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis) OR proof of a wrongful death from an asbestos-related illness.
  • Proof of exposure: Claimants must have documentation linking the victim’s illness to asbestos exposure from ITT through employment or use of their products.
  • Statute of limitations: Potential claimants have a limited time to file a claim. Deadlines vary by state, with most averaging just two to three years, so it’s critical to move quickly.

Notable Lawsuits Against ITT

ITT’s 2021 divestment of its asbestos liabilities to Delticus was a major financial transaction. To accomplish it, ITT sold InTelCo Management, LLC, the subsidiary that held its legacy asbestos liabilities, to Delticus HoldCo, a company specializing in the management of long-tail corporate liabilities.

ITT contributed approximately $398 million in cash to InTelCo. The divestiture resulted in a predicted one-time after-tax loss of roughly $27 million for ITT, a relatively small amount when compared to the $1 billion in asbestos-related insurance coverage the company won in 2017.

Despite all the maneuvering, victims of ITT asbestos exposure can still seek justice in court. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness following exposure to ITT’s asbestos products or activities, we can help you get a free case assessment today.

Major Verdicts

$1.085 Million

Millwright Worker

Mr. Rabovsky worked as a millwright and later developed mesothelioma after years of asbestos exposure from gaskets, packing, and other components used in his work. Following his death in 2012, his family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Goulds Pumps and several other companies. The court found Goulds Pumps, a subsidiary of ITT, to be 13% responsible for his illness and death.

$1.6 Million

Plumber

After exposure to Gilfillan’s (an ITT subsidiary) asbestos-containing plumbing products led to serious illness, the court awarded the 81-year-old plaintiff $1.6 million for his losses and injuries.

ITT’s Involvement With Asbestos

Founded in 1920, International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT) began as a communications company but rapidly expanded into manufacturing both electronics and industrial products.

Like many 20th-century manufacturers, ITT used asbestos in its products as an insulator, valuing it for its durability and resistance to heat and fire, while ignoring its toxic properties.

The company incorporated asbestos wiring, insulation, and electronic components in its products until the 1980s, endangering hundreds of thousands of employees and end users.

ITT also underwent a period of rapid expansion, acquiring more than 350 companies, several of which also had histories of asbestos use. These subsidiary companies, including Bell & Gossett, Goulds Pumps, Gilfillan, and Grinnell, LLC all added to ITT’s already significant exposure footprint.

Although the company completed the sale of its remaining asbestos liabilities to Delticus in 2021 through its subsidiary InTelCo Management, LLC, victims of its negligence can still seek compensation.
